Amy I Determine My Own Worth

Funny, fearless and frank. There’s a reason why Amy Schumer tops our list of favourite actresses right now.

Amy I Determine My Own Worth

If Look was a school, we’d want Amy Schumer as our head girl. She’s the cool, funny sister we never had and, to be honest, our biggest girl crush.

Her latest role? One that’s very close to home for the star. In I Feel Pretty (out 4 May), Amy plays Renee Bennett, a woman who longs to look like a supermodel until she hits her head and wakes up believing she is finally stunning, despite the viewer only seeing her as exactly the same woman.

‘There’s a message here that I wanted to send about confidence and where it should really come from,’ explains Amy, 36, at a screening of her new film. ‘And that is, don’t let anyone else tell you who you are or what you look like. You determine your own worth. Pay attention to the times when you feel best about yourself, and always carry that with you.’

However, the trailer ignited some backlash, with fans suggesting that the movie ‘missed the mark’. ‘That was kind of disappointing,’ says Amy. ‘Even then, though, I understood it, and knew that the film wasn’t about what they thought it was about.

‘It made me excited for people to actually see the movie and to know that that was not what it’s about – that she sees herself [differently], as skinny or beautiful. I am now well-versed in backlash, so I knew that the movie spoke for itself. But I’m a comedian, I’m a communicator – I want to be understood.
