Online affairs have ensnared an entire generation of married people. In the age of social media Apps, Aditi Kane discovers how to fight the temptation.
In an era of social media Apps like Whatsapp, Instagram, Facebook and whatnot, connecting with anyone has become child’s play. Simply lift your phone and send out a message, and you have a private encounter with someone you fancy set up! While this seems like heyday for those who want to have their cake and eat it too, think again... Forget to delete one message and have it slip by your partner… and you might not see the light of day ever again!
As marriages struggle with the new age phenomenon of social media, ‘SAVVY’ speaks to experts to discover just what you can do to stay away from the drama!
MAKING CONNECTIONS
For aeons, cheating has been the number one threat to marriages. But what makes it so different in today’s world is that it just seems so easy to do it. Flashback to anyone who’s dated in the ‘90s and they’ll tell you that having an affair meant real planning, effort, seriousness and sweat. If an affair actually took off, pre-planned physical clandestine meetings were a must, without any way of comunicating in between. Sounds like too much effort already?
Well, today, there’s always Google… and in this case, Apps to the rescue. Want to look up a cute lady who smiled at you? Or been wondering what happened to your prom date or soul mate from way back then? Just log in and Facebook will do the rest!
Divorce lawyer Kranti Sathe agrees, “There is definitely more intimacy between people outside their marriages due to social connectivity. It’s easier now to connect with someone you found interesting at a social gathering, and once you begin messaging on WhatsApp, there is an exchange of ideas and thoughts and before you know it, it develops into a full fledged affair. While social media per se is not the problem, the connectivity that it facilitates is one of the main reasons why affairs are taking place.”
