Throughout the first year, your child’s gummy grins will evolve into ways of expressing happiness and communicating with you. Read on to know about the different types of smiles she flashes.
WHEN I ENTERED motherhood, it bowled me over. Everything was a first—the first time I noticed my daughter smile in her sleep, the first time she recognised me, the first time she was affectionate towards me. My instant response was probably my best and longest smile ever, coupled with a ‘bucket’ of unstoppable tears. That was true happiness. Each of these moments is priceless and indescribable for any parent, and I am no different. Now that my daughter is 2, I have seen her smile evolve from an involuntary toothless grin, to a knowing, tongue-in-cheek one, to a wide grin that morphed into a full-throated laughter. What I have come to realise is that the versatility of the smile is as amazing as the science behind it. A child showcases six types of smiles during the first year. Each of these means something, has different triggers and develops as per a pattern and timeline. We help you to decode them.
