Sex during pregnancy doesn’t have to be uncomfortable. Know which positions are best for you and your bump.

Get Into Position

Pregnancy means making all sorts of changes to accommodate the little one growing in your tummy, and this includes matters in the bedroom. When it comes to sex during pregnancy, your usual positions might start to feel a bit tricky or uncomfortable especially as that bump of yours increases in size. But as long as you get a little creative, sex is definitely not out of the picture. Motherhood speaks to some experts on how to stay safe and still be able to have fun!

Debunking Common Myths

Before getting into the how, we address the pertinent question — will sex during pregnancy harm the foetus in anyway?

Dr Ting Hua Sieng, specialist in obstetrics and gynaecology at The Obstetrics & Gynaecology Centre (Singapore Medical Group), assures parents that sexual intercourse during pregnancy leaves the baby physically unharmed as he is fully protected by the womb’s amniotic sac.

Dr Ting also says that parents can dispel any fear that there will be psychological damage done to the baby when you have sex while he is in your tummy. Dr Martha Tara Lee, clinical sexologist of Eros Coaching, confirms that it is not remotely possible for your baby to actually see what you are doing, let alone remember it. Your baby might actually enjoy the gentle rocking of your uterine contractions during orgasm, she says.

In addition, Dr KK Chow, specialist in obstetrician and gynaecology at the Raffles Women’s Centre, Raffles Hospital, says that sex performed in the usual physiological manner should not result in miscarriage unless the mum suffers from medical conditions such as having a low-lying placenta or cervical incompetence. His advice is for couples to get a green light from their personal obstetricians before proceeding.
