A Taste For Kitchenalia

Vintage kitchenware and furniture is all the rage - but for maximum impact keep it real

Carol Burns
A Taste For Kitchenalia

WITH our love of Bake Off (cast and channel changes not withstanding) showing no signs of abating, not to mention the Great British Menu and Master chef, it was only a matter of time before we moved into kitchenalia collectables.

Kitchen design has changed many times over since we first introduced them to our (luxury) homes 500 years ago – although the rather compact Frankfurt Kitchen of 1926 is probably more familiar to those of us who can’t afford a cook and servants.

And while the cabinets and tiling we choose may be more about fashion, there’s still room for some well-chosen kitchen antiques - from vintage cake stands and antique ranges to early electric kitchen mixers and worktop meat mincers. The modern kitchen is fast filling up with the best the 20th century had to offer the modern housewife or cook – with the 1950s among the best loved eras.
