Since the early 1900s and the birth of the Stanislavsky Method, actors have been on a continual quest for truth while acting.
Prior to Stanislavsky, actors employed stock poses, a holdover from the Greeks, to denote specific emotion. And while these poses were convenient, they were less than inspiring and left both the actor and audience with no inkling of a real inner life.
A lot has changed since the 1900s and now every university and college requires its acting majors to not only be familiar with Stanislavsky's method, but also the methods of Chekhov, Adler, Meisner and more, all in an attempt to achieve sincerity and honesty on stage. Then why do we still have a bunch of actors holding basketballs?
