The Hole Story

DURING March, several birds and mammals are digging holes in trees, sometimes even ousting the current occupants of them, as a prelude to breeding. Here are three main culprits, plus a few of the chancers:

- Grey squirrels mainly make their nests (called dreys) from twigs, leaves and dry grass, high in the crooks of tree branches, but they will also gnaw small cavities in trees, often in rotten wood where a dead branch has fallen off. Teeth marks are usually visible around the edge of the hole.
