Breeding Issues

Pugs, French and English bulldogs are in demand – but their popularity is causing major issues, writes MARK KEBBLE

Breeding Issues

IN this world of Instagram and Twitter, it wouldn’t take long to find a celeb proudly showing off their gorgeous little pug or French bulldog. The breeds, officially known as brachycephalic and commonly referred to as ‘flat faced’ dogs, are very much en vogue, with fans eager to mirror their hero’s lifestyle – but as Dogs Trust is currently highlighting, this comes at a cost.

“The popularity of brachycephalic breeds has risen dramatically over the past few years and, as a result, so has ownership,” explains Catherine Dobbie, Dogs Trust veterinary surgeon. “This demand for so-called designer breeds is reflected in the breeds we see being illegally imported into the UK from Central and Eastern Europe to be sold to unsuspecting customers. People see a cute puppy in a picture and decide to make a purchase without thinking of the possible health issues.”
