In Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s latest, everything you know about vampires is true – just not in the way you think.
Here, in an alternate timeline, the world learned about the existence of vampires in 1967, and adjusted its laws accordingly. Mexico City is supposed to be a bloodsucker-free zone, so when a feud between two warring clans breaks out there, local narcos join up with the police in an attempt to stop the spread. Meanwhile, Atl, the pampered youngest daughter of the Tlahuihpochtin – a kind of feathery Aztec flying vampire – finds herself relying on the help of a hopelessly besotted street kid to get her safely out of town before the brutal Necros track her down.
Here, every culture’s version of vampire mythology is real. They’re all just different species. Tlahuihpochtin feed only on the young; Jiangshi are arthritic Chinese vampires; Necros are your standard Dracula models; and Revenants, well, they’re really scary.
