Merry & bright in Poplar

The Christmas specials of BBC1’s much-loved period drama Call the Midwife are always winter wonderlands, packed with festive traditions, good cheer, and heart-warming miracles.

But this year’s 90-minute episode feels even more of a treemendous treat as it was filmed during the coronavirus pandemic, with the first lockdown postponing production from March to August.

Set during December 1965, the story sees our favorite midwives and nuns enjoying the festivities in Poplar, with the usual blend of tears and triumphs along the way to the big day – and we’re even promised a sprinkling of snow! Plus, there’s some extra excitement thanks to the welcome arrival of a circus, led by ringmaster Mr. Percival, played by guest star Peter Davison. During a break in filming, stars Jenny Agutter, who turns 68 on 20 December, and Helen George, 36, join TV Times for a video chat, where they reveal what to expect for their characters, Sister Julienne and midwife Trixie, and how the seasonal special made it to our screens...

You must be delighted that there’s still a Christmas special this year...

HELEN: Yes, coming back to work at all is such a miracle and we’re just grateful to be here. We all kept in touch over lockdown but it was such a relief to see everyone, although it’s weird not being able to hug.
