The international men’s fashion crowd gathered in Miami on a cool early December to attend Kim Jones’ Dior Men Fall 2020 collection. After 24 hours in the air with limited connectivity, this writer was late to the game as to who the guest artist would be for the upcoming collection. Jones is known for creating artistic dialogues in each collection he designs for Dior Men — from American graffiti artist KAWS in his debut Summer 2019 collection to American visual artist, Daniel Arsham for Summer 2020 — so whispers were rife for an American artist since the Dior Men Fall 2020 show coincided with Art Basel Miami Beach.
“All the people I have collaborated with have one thing in common — they are highly competent in their field, and they are very confident in their work. Whenever I work with artists, I give them an idea of what we need but then respect their vision to do what they want to do, that’s the secret of a great collaboration,” shared Jones.
At Miami International Airport’s luggage belt and logged onto the house’s Instagram page @Dior, the post bore the unmistakeable font type teasing the Fall 2020 collection — Shawn Stussy’s. The scope for Miami Beach’s choice widened to encompass surfers flocking to the destination and riding the legendary waves — a business Stussy founded upon, making surfboards signed off with his last name by a broad tipped marker.
