RAGHURAM RAJAN

The voice of reason and an icon in his own right, the leading economist and academician opens up to Shahnaz Siganporia about being schooled on feminism by his daughter

He made headlines as the RBI governor, giving us gems like “I am Raghuram Rajan…and I do what I do,” Shobhaa De expounded on his “unbearable hotness” and any criticism levelled against him was countered by a series of compelling speeches. In no time, Raghuram Rajan became the poster boy of India’s economic leadership. It’s been three years since his term ended, but he’s still grabbing headlines—be it for his recent bestseller, or for being rumoured to be a forerunner for the governorship of the Bank of England. Few economists and academicians achieve his level of celebrity that cuts through industry and into all-round popularity, complete with his share of trolls and detractors. Sure, there is some prettyprivilege here, but don’t let that take away from his erudition—apart from his term as the 23rd governor of the RBI, he’s the former chief economist of the IMF, he forewarned the 2008 financial crisis, made it to Time magazine’s ‘Most Influential’ list in 2016, and is currently a professor of finance at the Chicago Booth School of Business. So, how did Raghuram Rajan, the quintessential IIT-IIM-MIT good-boy grad, turn into the economic and financial agent of cool?
