From the febrile brightness of an election summer in Varanasi, I had a vision of summer elsewhere. It was May. The broad leafy avenues surrounding the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) were alight with the burnt orange of gulmohar trees in bloom. The “loo” had begun to blow, bringing with it the full blast of stupefying heat. It robbed the sky of pigment and reduced the clouds to veined outlines. The desert wind emptied the streets of the old city and feathered the surface of the Ganga with white caps. Outside an election raged—a historic election, by turns full of hope and anger. And it gave those overheated days an extra layer of fever.
