At Watches and Wonders Geneva 2021, the key attraction unveiled by Jaeger-LeCoultre includes the Reverso Hybris Mechanica Calibre 185, a quadriptyqe timepiece with two dials on the case and two more on the cradle. We cover this masterpiece in detail in another multi-brand article about the star novelties from that show (Pages 144-149). However, it does not take all those complications to cement the place of the Reverso in the hearts and minds of watch collectors worldwide.
Little did the creators know that the rectangular timepiece born in 1931 would go on to be permanently etched in watchmaking history. The Reverso’s defining characteristic is the reversible case that protects the crystal from physical harm during polo matches. Outside of the polo field, and over the ensuing decades, it resonated with watch buyers who were fascinated by its art deco appeal, and it managed to stay relevant through size changes and dial makeovers – all while staying true to the original spirit. The collection also housed more than 50 different movements in this period of 90 years.
