Strength training does more than tone your muscles. “It’s one of the best defenses against arthritis symptoms,” says Michael Lau, a physical therapist at Providence Saint John’s Health Center’s Performance Therapy in Los Angeles. Here’s how it helps.

1 IT EASES PAIN.

According to a 2016 review in Clinical Rehabilitation, resistance training reduced knee osteoarthritis (OA) pain by 41 percent and stiffness by 31 percent. “Strong muscles support and protect the joint,” says Stefanie Brewer, a clinical physical therapy specialist at the Detroit Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan. “This reduces pressure to the joint, which can lessen the ache.”
