Planting bulbs for next spring is something I look forward to each year. Searching out scented daffodils and feathery tulips is something I enjoy and in my case, as I replace them every year (though you don’t have to), there’s usually something new.
I came to the conclusion years ago that, for me, I was best sticking to containers as I was forever digging the beds and the bulbs kept popping up all over the place. More particular gardeners will no doubt remember where they are and unlike me avoid spearing them with a fork.
Bulbs grown in pots need good drainage so put plenty of crocks in the bottom and use a well-drained compost. For my pots I use two parts John Innes No 2 with one part horticultural grit. Remember not all bulbs thrive in these conditions, some, like Snakeshead Fritillary, F. Meleagris, only flourish when grown in damp soil. Most however enjoy a sunny spot.
Late September to November is the best period to plant most bulbs. Smaller ones dry out and deteriorate if they are out of the ground too long so they are best planted in September and October. Daffodils are planted at the same time but tulips can go in as late as November.
