Now, more than ever before, it is our responsibility to reduce the volume of waste our households generate. This is important if we are to preserve our natural resources for ourselves and generations to come. Luckily, forward-thinking companies have developed innovative products to assist in our efforts and make recycling a fun and easy activity that all household members can participate in.
KEEP IT SIMPLE
Before you start recycling, reduce the amount of potential waste material that enters your home. Vanessa Jordaan, director of Whole Earth Recycling, says this can be done by purchasing products with less packaging.
“You could purchase fresh fruit and vegetables from a store that allows you to place them all into a box instead of having to buy them wrapped individually. You could also purchase fruit in cardboard boxes, instead of non-recyclable plastic punnets. When purchasing products, you should also check if they are recyclable or not.”
Try to avoid becoming overwhelmed by the various recycling options by making small lifestyle changes, such as starting a compost heap. According to Annie Hendricks, marketing assistant at Yuppiechef, fruit and vegetable scraps, eggshells and coffee grounds can all be composted instead of being thrown in the bin. “Something as simple as starting a compost heap can reduce your carbon footprint, save money on fertiliser and is great for your soil and plants.”
