Only the previous season, Celtic had won their first championship since 1954 when Jock Stein was captain...now he was manager and the tide had turned
THIS was the big one when Celtic didn’t only win the treble but played the Celtic Way to a complete whitewash by winning all FIVE competitions they entered.
The Glasgow Cup was still a major trophy in those days. Indeed, the first round drew 76,000 to Ibrox where a Bobby Lennox hat-trick helped Celtic to a 4-0 win.
There were further 4-0 wins over Queen’s Park and Partick Thistle as Celtic romped to the trophy but there was no doubt as to the main capture of the season.
Celtic lifted the European Cup at the first time of asking to become the first British and the first non-Latin team to win the trophy as thousands of Hoops fans swapped Saltcoats for Lisbon for their holidays this year.
