With All Things Supernatural Now On-trend, Candice Carty-williams Gets Spiritual And Visits A Tarot Reader
Magic Happens

“IF YOU COULD SHUFFLE the cards, Candice,” says the smiling tarot reader sitting opposite me. “Really get your energy into them – there might be traces of the person who had a reading before you hanging about, so give them a good mix.”

A week ago, if you’d told me that I’d be sitting in a room trying not to drop a deck of tarot cards bigger than my hands, I would’ve laughed. I grew up with a grandmother who believed in spirits and the power of dreams, who warned me about the dangers of Obeah, a type of Jamaican sorcery with West African origins. She once called me three times in one morning to tell me she’d dreamt that I’d eaten a spoilt yoghurt and had fallen ill, and warned me against eating any dairy that day. As a child, I scoffed. Yes, like many, I love to attribute people I meet with the characteristics of their zodiac signs. But for most of my life, that was the limit of my interest in the supernatural.
