The music business is as much about a musician’s image as it is about their music. Every musician worth their weight in gold have gone out on a limb to achieve a certain look that makes them stand out: from Madonna’s constantly evolving style which is an ode to issues and trends relevant at the moment, to Beyonce’s sleek red carpet gowns.

In the melee of form and shape-shifting style statements, if there is one musician who stands out, it is Katy Perry. Count the fashion attributes that the high-power fashion magazines love her for: quirky styling, bold colours, playful aesthetics and far-out edgy statements. The American Elle Magazine, writing about her fashion choices, says: “Katy Perry is certainly no wallflower when it comes to fashion. Whether she is sporting neon hair or retro glamour, she’s constantly catching eyes and turning heads.”

If in 2004, she sported a retro vibe in an elegant silk pink tea dress at a Sass & Bide party in LA, in 2005, she wore a distinctly mid-Noughties bootcut jeans and pointed shoe ensemble. In 2008, Perry not just hit it big with her single I Kissed A Girl, she also came to be known for her wildly colourful outfits—metallic orange mini dress, retro rompers, et al. At the Grammy Awards 2009, the singer looked stunning in Basil Soda’s pale pink ruffles dress. When Perry released her next album, Teenage Dream, her style matched the upbeat pop music. Since then, Perry has become an international pop sensation not just known for her single hits but also for her uniquely experimental style.
