‘Khelega India Toh Khilega India’ - Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji’s simple mantra for the youth of the country, has been the driving force behind transforming the perception of sports in India in the last few years. Sports, once perceived only as an extra-curricular activity, by most, is now taking center stage. Strong schemes adopted by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, be it Khelo India, Target Olympic Podium Scheme or Fit India Movement, have played a significant role in motivating youngsters to pursue a serious career in sports, and the number is on a steady rise. Specifically for girl athletes, empathy and inclusiveness have been key drivers for game-changing reforms. As we celebrate the National Girl Child Day, it is therefore imperative to look at the way our government has worked with the aim of ‘SabkaSaath, SabkaVikas, SabkaVishwas’ resulting in a paradigm shift in embracing issues in respect to girls and women, including sports.

People often ask me about my life out of uniform. Honestly, I have had no problems. Not so far. Instead, I find it quite refreshing. No routine, no parades, no briefing, no impending operations. Having donned the uniform since the age of thirteen until I hung up my boots last year, could I ever visualize life out of uniform? Not really. But, as I said, the transition has been quite smooth–no hang-overs, no regrets. People have been very positive in their interactions. Government departments have been responsive whenever I have approached for assistance.The genuine respect for the uniform is quite evident and it makes my heart swell with pride. Arunachal, to that extent, is the most nationalistic state in the country, I daresay. It has been kind of a revelation for me to experience the freedom of being a common man in an environment of positivity!
