There is a reason why Knysna and Plettenberg Bay are two of SA’s most popular holiday destinations. Madge Booth heads to this stretch of the Garden Route and discovers a perfect mix of luxury, nature and a whole host of family-friendly activities
The Garden Route is a wonderfully versatile part of our country – a perfect place for a fun-filled family holiday.
With its breathtaking surroundings and great outdoor experiences it’s easy to become one with nature and forget about the fast-paced routine of ordinary life. Plus you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to unique accommodation and restaurants.
KNYSNA
Knysna is one of those South African towns where nature, art, history and adventure are beautifully intertwined. Built around the Knysna Lagoon, with the impressive Knysna Heads on either side of the river mouth, this small town is home to a thriving creative and artistic community, which contributes to the laid-back holiday vibe.
EAT, SLEEP, PLAY
No place captures the spirit of Knysna better than The Turbine Boutique Hotel and Spa (www. turbinehotel.co.za). This unique space used to be a power station on the famous Thesen Island. Stepping inside, you’re immediately struck by its uniqueness: when converting the power station into a hotel, the architects and interior designers kept almost all of the original structures, which gives it an industrial feel, but because it is filled with modern furniture and exceptional art it is warm and inviting at the same time. The hotel combines the history and present-day spirit of Knysna perfectly. It’s a place where two worlds come together.
The hotel’s art collection – which includes paintings, photographs and sculptures – is curated by Corlie de Kock from Knysna Fine Art (fine-arts.co.za), and much of it is for sale, making the hotel a true living art gallery.
The hotel has an intimate feel – with just 26 rooms – and has two restaurants, the Gastro Pub and Island Café, which form part of Thesen Island’s exciting culinary offerings.
