LOVE OF NATURE AND BRAVERY OF FRIENDS INSPIRES IRENE

Another Spring

The writer of this month’s Short Story is a regular and successful entrant to our annual competition – Irene I’Anson.

Another Spring is a beautifully observed piece, and Irene explains: “The theme of and inspiration for my story is a combination of several things. There has been much talk recently of the health benefits both physical and mental from spending quality time in a garden. My love of wildlife and the natural world and my concern at deforestation and destruction of the rainforests was another factor.

“I have friends and acquaintances sadly battling unforgiving illness and disability. Their bravery and positivity is both humbling and inspiring, a fact I wanted to weave into my story.

“I was so pleased to hear that my short story ‘Another Spring’ was to be published in Let’s Talk magazine this year. For me, one of the best things about the magazine – although there are many – is the opportunity to write a story and, maybe, have it published. With a word count and deadline it focuses one to just get writing, I would urge anyone who thinks they may have a story in them to give it a go.”

Irene, a retired office worker, has lived in Norfolk for about 20 years, just over five of those at Holt.

She says: “I can honestly say that life is never boring. We are always busy, indeed I wonder where the time goes!

“I belong to the U3A, a craft group, where much time is spent putting the world to rights over tea and biscuits, the class agree we could sort it all in a fortnight given the chance . . . Then I try to see as much of family and friends as I can.

“I have always loved to write and as a child I would get good marks for my essays and composition. Being an only child, which can be lonely, my nose was always in a book, plus I had a very fertile imagination. I must now put my thinking cap on for this year’s competition!”
