After Suzanne Proctor’s beloved pet pug began losing mobility in his back legs earlier this year, the mum feared the worst and rushed him straight to the vet.
The 49-year-old from Melbourne said she had no idea what was wrong but was worried that her pooch, Dudley, 12, might have to be put down.
Following an examination, the vet determined that little Dudley had been struck down by canine degenerative myelopathy – similar to multiple sclerosis (MS) in humans – and, sadly, would never walk again.
Without the use of his back legs, Suzanne and her husband Chris, 46, and their daughter Emily, 8, feared the pup would have no quality of life and they could see him getting more depressed by the day.
But after being gifted a doggy wheelchair from a close friend, the family decided to give it a go – and instantly, Dudley perked up and had an entirely new lease on life.
“We went to the vet back in February after we began noticing that Dudley was losing a bit of use in his back legs,” Suzanne tells New Idea. “It was only one paw that wasn’t quite right at first, and so we took him to get checked out after we realised it was getting worse.
“We had no idea what was wrong with him. I was so frightened that it might be a tumour or some awful painful disease.
