Ardent collector of vintage Cartier timepieces HARRY FANE talks to Jamie Nonis about his love affair with the Tank
It’s the stuff of legend, the Cartier Tank. Princess Diana is said to have owned two. Classic Hollywood icons Clark Gable and Cary Grant both wore Tank watches, as did Ol’ Blue Eyes himself, Frank Sinatra. The late American first lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis was often photographed wearing a 1962 gold Tank Ordinaire. And at a Christie’s auction two years ago, reality TV star Kim Kardashian West reportedly splashed over US$380,000 to procure the very same piece.
“Owning a Cartier Tank connects one to an earlier day, back when glamour and elegance ruled,” says Harry Fane, the world’s leading expert on all things vintage Cartier.
It was a rite of passage for young French aristocrats to be taken to Cartier to choose their first Cartier wristwatch upon reaching the age of 18. “And Cartier watches have been worn by the rich and famous ever since,” says Fane, whose father was the 15th Earl of Westmorland; his elder brother Anthony currently holds the title.
