Madrid has never been afraid to tinker with its tennis. The event was once held on indoor hard courts in the fall, then became an outdoor clay event in the spring—and then, one year, decided to dye that clay blue. This year, in another bit of experimentation, Madrid hosts the third installment of Tie Break Tens. On May 4, eight men and eight women will play 10-point tiebreakers over a single evening to determine two winners. “We need to be at our best from the very first point,” said Maria Sharapova, who also received a wild card into the WTA event. “It assures excitement with its hectic format,” says tournament director Manolo Santana.
