Life After An Affair

Chances are, you know someone who has been affected by infidelity. 60 per cent of men and 40 per cent of women have admitted to having an affair while married.

The reasons cited for straying range from being in a relationship that has been “bad” for some time; a desire to prove sexual prowess; no longer attracted to the partner; boredom and an urge to do something different.

Here in Malaysia, local reports showed that infidelity came in second after financial matters, when it came to reasons why Malaysian marriages ended in divorces.

While the motivations behind why people have affairs vary, all couples face one thing in common: The challenges and decisions about what comes next. Here, the experts share some practical advice for dealing with infidelity.

“Should I end our marriage?”

Last year, my husband told me he had had an affair. It lasted for three months and he ended it to try to save our marriage. We have been together for 15 years and have two children. I have tried to get past what has happened, but no longer feel “good enough” for him. Should I leave him?

Relationships are built on respect, trust and being considerate of our partner’s feelings – and an affair flies in the face of that.

The message your husband sent to you was, “For whatever reason, something about you is not good enough, so I sought it elsewhere.”

Your husband has to understand the extent to which he has hurt you. That means he needs to communicate that you mean something to him.

You need to reach a point of forgiveness and see from your partner that he is genuinely working to re-establish your confidence.
