And now, the COVID-19 necklace

DEER ISLE—As an organism, COVID-19 is beautiful but lethal, said Sarah Doremus in a socially distanced interview with the Island Ad-Vantages on May 9. “You can admire something that’s deadly but beautifully engineered,” she said. “Like rabies.” Or like COVID-19.

And so Doremus made a COVID-19 necklace, a medallion that looks just like the virus on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website. But Doremus’ necklace also admonishes the wearer—as does the CDC— to “Wash your hands.” That message on the back of the necklace is lettered on a brass plate, which also contains a small vial of soap.
