Gavin Williams says he feels for Merthyr Town fans after the Pitching In Southern Premier South club applied to sit the season out because of the current Covid restrictions in Wales.

The Martyrs say they have no choice but to mothball for the 2020-21 campaign, much like Step 4 Guernsey have.

They pulled out of last Tuesday’s FA Cup game against Poole Town, who get a bye through, with the area also under a local lockdown.

Boss Williams, told The NLP: “It’s probably the right decision but I do understand and feel for the supporters – who obviously want to watch their football team play – and my players and staff, who have all got to look for new clubs with the season already started. So I do feel really sorry for them.

“It was a tough decision when it was made but now with Merthyr being on lockdown, no one can come in and we can’t travel out so we would have been so many games behind.
