Nation's Clap Of Thunder For NHS Heroes

Millions of people the length and breadth of the UK clapped and cheered from balconies, doorsteps, windows and gardens to play their part in the weekly Clap for our Carers campaign.

It is designed to recognize our dedicated healthcare heroes and key workers who are fighting the virus crisis.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson had said he hoped to be able to take part in yesterday’s celebration despite remaining in self-isolation after testing positive for Covid-19.

Appreciation

And, true to his word, he later stepped outside the front door of 10 Downing Street to join the big thank you.

His spokesman said earlier: “The PM definitely wants to find a way of expressing his continued appreciation for the fantastic efforts that NHS staff are making and would urge as many people as possible to take part tonight.”

Mr Johnson has previously said the clapping is not only for the NHS but also the “police, social care workers, teachers and everybody who works in schools, DWP [work and pensions] staff... an amazing national effort by the public services, but also by every member of the British public who is volunteering”.

The Round Tower at Windsor Castle, where the Queen and Prince Philip are staying, was lit up in the colour of the health service to hail the dedication of countless medics and workers.

Before yesterday’s applause, more than 70 stars of stage, screen and sport joined forces to send a big-hearted “thank you” to those fighting the virus.
