Marcus Smith is currently the nation’s darling, fresh from an impressive cameo against Tonga last week that highlighted why the Harlequins fly-half has everyone so excited.
At just 22, Smith is viewed as the future of England, and the fact he will start at 10 tomorrow against Australia is telling about where this side is going under Jones.
Some, including former England World Cup-winning head coach Sir Clive Woodward, have argued the emergence of Smith could mean the end of Farrell, but such a scenario is not currently in Jones’s mind.
At the start of the autumn, he made his intentions clear, naming Farrell as captain and saying: “He’s the best man for the job.”
Externally, Farrell may have his critics, but in Jones he has one of his most loyal supporters — and the Australian is convinced he and Smith can make a new axis in attack for England.
