Despite the rain, Stonington still has to haul water, fixes leak

STONINGTON—The Stonington Water Company began hauling 200,000 gallons of water for the second time this summer to replenish its supply because of inadequate rainfall and heavy usage by summer visitors.

The select board on August 16 gave the water company permission to spend $25,000 to buy and transport more water, if needed.

Stonington Town Manager Kathleen Billings said the weekend storm brought only half an inch of rain, which just wasn’t enough.

“Rain seems to go everywhere but here,” she said in a phone interview.

On August 23, the water truck began making two to four trips daily hauling water from Bucksport to a Stonington well.
