The Gospel writers refer to it as ‘Golgotha’ or ‘Calvary’.
It was also called ‘Gordon’s Calvary’ because of the enthusiastic support that British general gave to its identification as the probable location of the place where the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus took place. In spite of Gordon’s strong advocacy, majority opinion has preferred to regard the Church of the Holy Sepulchre as the more likely place, consequently, Skull Hill has never received the reverent respect accorded to recognised ‘holy places’.
