BOYD Rankin may be the only member of the Ireland team not dipping his toe into uncharted waters – but the magnitude of today’s clash with Afghanistan is not lost on the 34-year-old stalwart.
On a momentous day for all involved, Ireland were due to begin the first overseas Test in their history – and both sides’ second-ever foray into the five day arena – against Asghar Afghan’s side at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Dehradun, India, in the early hours of this morning, with the ICC’s 11th and 12th Test-playing nations facing off.
There will be no cold feet from Rankin, who made his Test debut in an Ashes series for England before returning to play for the country of his birth, but little danger of the fast bowler not savouring what promises to be a watershed moment for Irish cricket.
“Test cricket is something I grew up with, watching it on TV when I was younger,” said fast bowler Rankin.
