HE MAY have been born and raised in Yorkshire, but James Pamment can take pride in the role he has played in moulding a modern New Zealand great.
Pamment emigrated to New Zealand as a teenager before playing first-class cricket in the country. Now, though, he’s best known as a man who has played a key role in forming the game of Kane Williamson throughout his formative years.
The Northern Districts coach is leaving his role in New Zealand at the end of next week to take up a position of fielding coach for the Mumbai Indians.
But before the Indian Premier League (IPL) kicks off in earnest, he’ll be keeping a close eye on the fortunes of Williamson as the Kiwis look for a first Test series success on home soil against England in a generation.
“He was a 14-year-old when I first started working with him and you could tell then that he was going to be an exceptional player,” says Pamment.
