TOBY Roland-Jones has learnt to look on the bright side of life after missing out on last winter’s Ashes series and an entire English summer due to a lower back stress fracture.
The Middlesex seamer could have been forgiven for letting frustration get the better of him after the injury robbed him of a chance to capitalise on his Test breakthrough in 2017.
However, while England have been away again this winter, he has spent the time planning for his wedding and working hard on a return to competitive cricket. He has just started bowling again and early signs are positive.
Speaking exclusively to The Cricket Paper, Roland-Jones said: “I had a scan at the start of November just to confirm that everything was all healed up and looking good and the feedback from doctors and physios came back really positive.
“So, that gave us the green light to keep pushing ahead. From then we’ve just been making a steady progression. It all seems like it’s really good at the moment, the body’s feeling good.”
Roland-Jones first sustained his injury at the end of 2017 summer, ruling him out of Ashes contention – a cruel blow after such a dream start to Test cricket.
Rehabilitation work with the England Pace Programme followed before he went on a Lions tour of the West Indies early last year. However, he experienced soreness during a Championship match at the end of April and was diagnosed with a recurrence of the same injury. It spelled an immediate end to his 2018 campaign.
