Before the first press conference at the Quest Diagnostics Center for Pat Shurmur began, it was abundantly clear that most Giants fans, including many TGI Twitter followers, did not want this man to become the 18th head coach of the New York football Giants.
Most likely it’s because everybody became caught up in the New England hype and the thought that their two sought-after assistant coaches would become the next Vince Lombardi and Tom Landry. Everyone assumed that Josh McDaniels would be a great head coach because of the magic he produces with that Patriots offense. Matt Patricia? He has worked next to the great Bill Belichick for years so that alone has to be good for twelve wins, no? Well, what we have learned over the years is that Belichick’s disciples are nothing close to Bill Belichick. So maybe Pat Shurmur wasn’t John Mara and Dave Gettleman’s first choice, but it doesn’t matter. Does that mean they settled on a coach who can’t put a fifth Lombardi in the trophy case? Absolutely not.
As the search for the new coach progressed, TGI tweeted that Mara Tech (as Jerry Foley puts it) was leaning towards Shurmur. Many followers asked us why and based on their comments they were also praying that TGI was wrong. After really studying Shurmur, we believe that he fills what ownership was looking for as he brings with him maturity, an authority figure who demands discipline (one who the players will likely respect), experience, and confidence.
