What's Left And Where Do We Go From Here?
PAUL SCHWARTZ: It would be nice to look at the last month of the season and anticipate the Giants going with a youth movement, looking ahead to the promise of a brighter future rather than dwell on the misery of the present. That really cannot happen, as injuries long ago ravaged the roster, forcing young players onto the field before they were ready. It is yet another reason why this season has been so lousy. Still, there are a few places the Giants should visit. Wayne Gallman played more snaps (22) in the 20-10 loss to the Redskins than Orleans Darkwa (19) and that is a trend worth further investigation. Darkwa is headed to unrestricted free agency and Gallman is a rookie draft pick. It would be worthwhile to see if Gallman can handle a great load. Avery Moss has shown signs that he has potential as a pass-rusher and increased snaps for him is not a bad idea. Can Moss handle more of a full-time role and develop into a run-stopper in addition to his pass-rush skills? Extra time on the field will help make that determination. Undrafted rookie Chad Wheeler held up fine in his NFL starting debut against the Chiefs and not-so-fine in start No. 2 against Ryan Kerrigan and the Redskins. Wheeler should stay in the starting lineup and when Justin Pugh returns, stick him back inside at guard, where he wants to play anyway. As for Davis Webb, we’ll see when the coaching staff feels he is ready for extended action as an NFL quarterback. Now that the Giants have told Eli Manning to take a seat and end his consecutive starting streak, it would at least be nice to see Webb activated for a few games.
