From inception, SEGA Heroes seemed destined for equal parts failure and, as a keen retro gamer, disappointment. The choice of genre initially set alarm bells ringing, LOUDLY. The RPG puzzle subgenre, yes there are enough games out there to categorise them as being part of their own subgenre, has never resonated with me. I find it is stuck between the two parent genres, lacking enough core features to satisfy fans of either. The ‘stuck between two poles’ gameplay is based on the standard and fairly inadequate puzzle style of matching three or more icons, popularised by Candy Crush, etc., mixed with basic RPG experience building/grinding to level up and learn or in most cases simply buying your levels via in-app purchases, personally I prefer cheating!
This generally ill-fitting game style isn’t a solid base for a potentially great game and in the case of SEGA Heroes is far from befitting of its stellar cast of characters that include: Phantasy Star, Shinobi, Golden Axe and Sonic, to name but a few.
Frankly, instead of inspiring the excitement of a potential SEGA Avengers-style cross over, their casting seems token at best and at worst, cheap.
