[ MOTORHOME REVIEW ] DISCOVERER 4 (VERSION 4)
“Look! Eland, over there! And there is an ostrich! Not sure what that is, it’s moving very slowly, must be stalking something.
“Let’s stop to watch… and have some tea and warm melktert!”
We were trolling the roads of the West Coast National Park, taking in the sights. It was pre-flower season and when the veld is in bloom it is a natural phenomenon not to be missed.
But even in the Cape’s blustery winter there are other inspiring sights to see: flocks of pink flamingos wading along on tall legs in the shallow waters of Churchhaven; Kraalbaai’s unusual umbrella rock formation, which provides a nice walk to stretch the legs; and Tsaarsbank’s braai spot, where the cold Atlantic relentlessly sends wave after wave smashing against a united-we-stand, rocky, coastline before bursting into displays of spray and foam.
A walk on the white, white sandy beach is a must do, no matter what the weather. Here, you will experience the real meaning of ‘the gift of life’.
We were enjoying the day in Motorhome-World’s latest incarnation of its most popular motorhome, the Discoverer 4.
At 6.9 m long and 2.2 m wide with a GVM of just under 3 500 kg, we felt special – actually privileged – to be taking in such sights.
We had a distinct advantage over ordinary motorists. Sitting up high, the view from the Discoverer’s big glass windows was giving us a view that others couldn’t get.
Of course, we had another advantage in that we had a home convenience wherever we stopped: cold refreshments from the fridge, warm pies from the microwave, the best picnic table in the park… not to mention a flushing toilet!
And if we felt like a nap after lunch, that big rear-end bed beckoned!
