As one of New Zealand’s most famous dancers, Candy Lane is used to being in the limelight. The former Dancing With the Stars judge has starred on London’s West End, won national and international titles and has taught hundreds of young performers.
But this time it’s her mum Mary Lane who is taking centre stage. The mother of two, grandmother of four and great-grandmother of five has achieved an extraordinary milestone: turning 100 years old.
“I’m looking forward to the next 100,” Mary jokes before revealing the best piece of advice she ever gave her daughter: “Never let a man know you can cook or you’ll be cooking for the rest of your life!”
Both mother and daughter put “good genes” down to Mary’s longevity. “Her great-granny lived to 114!” Candy, 59, explains. However, it could also be because Mary knows how to find the joy in life.
Mary celebrated her October 9 birthday with a party at the Auckland retirement village she lives in. As well as family, her famous guests included Hayley Holt (who Candy once taught) and former actor Shane Cortese.
“Mum was a natural singer and dancer, and has always been known for her great parties,” Candy smiles. “My godparents were Bob and Jeanne Sell, who owned most of the clubs and restaurants in Auckland back in the day, so we always had entertainers at our house.”
