Natasha's choice: A SLIDING DOOR

When space is tight or when an outward or inward-opening hinged door is inconvenient, a sliding pocket door or a barn-style door makes a neat and practical solution.

What is a pocket door?

The door slides into a cavity (or ‘pocket’) in the adjacent wall, disappearing from view when the entryway is open. The wall needs to be deep and wide enough to accommodate the door. There are 10 standard sizes of doors in the UK, with H1981xW762mm a popular choice, and thicknesses between 35mm and 44mm.

How do I fit it?

Typically, the door slides along an upper track, available in kit form, built into the studwork of a non-solid wall. Alternatively, a door can slide into a steel-framed cassette, with plasterboard installed directly over its surface. Usually, the door is purchased separately. Make sure to buy one without projecting facings and be aware that nonstandard door sizes may require a custom-made solution.
