How can you be sure your relationship will last the distance? There are some red flags to watch for and key themes that make couples compatible, says psychologist and relationship expert Carmen Harra. Take her revealing quiz to see how your partnership measures up…
1 Do you feel calm around your partner?
You shouldn’t be in a relationship with anyone who constantly evokes anxiety, worry or fear. If this is the case, it means your partner hasn’t developed enough integrity and consideration for others. A toxic relationship is one that causes more harm than good and creates frequent feelings of anxiety, anger and even desperation. The greatest gift anyone can give you is peace of mind. A partner who inspires tranquillity and steadies your emotions is like water to a rose garden. It’ll help you flourish.
2 What does your future look like?
Can you imagine building it together? Can you see yourself growing old with this person? If your partner shows serious flaws – such as addiction, abuse or pathological lying – you may not be able to see a future together. Try to visualise your relationship in five, 10 or even 20 years down the road. How do you expect it to change and evolve? If the thought pleases and reassures you, that’s a good sign.
3 How does your partner treat their family?
