Why go?
England’s capital is a world destination – a unique mix of culture, architecture, history, top entertainment and ideas – there’s a genuine buzz you won’t find anywhere else.
Getting around
Squeezing on the Tube, jumping on a red double-decker, and hailing a black cab are essential London experiences. But you can’t beat an opentop bus for economy and convenience. It’s ideal for seeing iconic landmarks such as Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, St Paul’s Cathedral and the London Eye, and with earphones supplied, you’ll hear the city’s history along the way, too. Hop on and off as often as you like. Passes for 24, 48 or 72 hours available; tootbus.com. Look up as well as around you.
Shop ’til you drop
Bag a bargain in the January sales, be it in Oxford Street, Kensington or King’s Road. Liberty and Fortnum & Mason are well worth visiting for their gorgeous displays. For quality one-offs, museum and gallery shops are a treasure. For a little banter, check out the markets – Borough (‘London’s Larder’), Columbia Road (flowers), Portobello (vintage and fashion), Victoria Park (another foodie paradise). Readers should head to the Southbank Centre Book Market under Waterloo Bridge for a wide range of second-hand books.
