Why being a trainer is about lifting and listening
During a night out the other week, someone said, ‘It must have been so interesting being a personal trainer, Annie. Bit like being their hairdresser, I suppose. Did they, you know, divulge stuff?’ She edged nearer so I could whisper in her ear. ‘Depends how out of breath they were!’ I guffawed, and then quickly shut up, realising she was hoping for gossip. I mumbled something about confidentiality, which seemed to do the trick.

The truth is, she’s right – it’s one of the most interesting jobs ever. People are fascinating! In the quiet privacy of a training studio, the floodgates seem to open. There’s something beautiful about the link between the effort clients make to lift, push, pull, row, cycle, and how much that opens their minds and their emotions.
