Shetland Northern Isles

The swirling colours of the aurora borealis

This rugged archipelago in the Northern Isles of Scotland is closer to the north pole than any other part of the UK, making it the best location to see the aurora borealis. Known locally as ‘mirrie dancers’, this elusive spectacle occurs when charged particles from the sun strike the earth’s atmosphere. The results are otherworldly; the skies glow with eerie green lights, suffused with pink and orange hues. Visit between October and March for the best chances of beholding this mesmerising phenomenon. You can combine this trip with the Up Helly Aa fire festivals (between January and March), which celebrate Shetland’s Viking heritage. The pebbly beaches, heather hills and sandy dunes offer countless outdoor activities.
