The psychological load of competition compels all the ambitious parents to admit their wards to English medium public school, where the children have a vast syllabus, more homework and excessive emphasis on various examinations. Moreover, learning all the subjects through the English medium creates overwhelming stress in the minds of average students because they have to cram to pass the examinations. Cramming is not learning and the stress created while cramming the subjects affects the mental health of the students.
The research undertaken by ICMR, IHEA and AIIMS have revealed that 30 per cent of Delhi’s school students suffer from hypertension and 25 per cent have high blood cholesterol. Moreover health surveys have indicated juvenile diabetes and migraine among the students. Normally academic under-achievers in education display vulnerability to health problems leading to psychosomatic disorders. Queues of the students are seen at the psychiatrists’ clinics at the time of annual examinations. The most common complaints of these students are feeling of anxiety, nervousness, headache, depressions and weakness. Dr Raman Kumar Solanki professor of psychiatry, SMS Medical College, said that emotionally surcharged and immature children fell prey of various kinds of tensions when they were not abe to achieve their aims in the short period.
