From donkey to dune bug

The beloved old beach buggy turned 60 last year. We take a look at its history... and its possible future.

Beach vehicles first emerged in the 1950s as part of the Post-World War II economic expansion. The first of these was the Fiat Jolly in 1957, but it was aimed at the upper class – people like Grace Kelly, Aristotle Onassis, and US President Lyndon B Johnson all owned one.

A second example was BMC’s Mini Moke (“moke” is slang for a donkey), originally designed for the British army but later marketed as an affordable runabout for the average Joe.
