ROVER and out?

CORONATION STREET
MON,WED & FRI, 8PM, ITV1 SOAP

The Rovers Return has been at the heart of Coronation Street ever since the ITV1 soap hit screens in 1960, with a long line of iconic landlords and landladies dispensing pints and wisdom from behind that famous mahogany bar. But are we about to witness the end of an era?

As current landlady Jenny Connor (played by Sally Ann Matthews) battles inflation, she’s forced to admit that the boozer is on the brink of financial collapse. Can she come up with a rescue plan, or will she soon call last orders for the final time?

Here, in an exclusive interview with TV Times, Sally Ann, 52, talks Rovers past, present and future…

How important is the Rovers to Jenny?

It’s everything to her. She saw it when she first moved to the Street as a beacon of friendship, shelter and community, so she feels she needs to carry on that legacy. She’s been trying her best, but she’s known for a while that things aren’t looking good.

So how does she feel about possibly losing it?

Well, initially, she never wanted the pub – Johnny [Connor, Jenny’s late husband] bought it. But it’s been her home for the past five years and she was a barmaid there before, and I think she sees it as the most stable home she’s ever had. And she thinks she has failed Johnny. It was his dream and she’s carrying it on.
