It's impossible to talk about iconic shoe brands without mentioning Manolo Blahnik. With a career of over five decades, the designer has redefined luxury footwear by creating styles that transcend trends and generations. From the famed BB (inspired by French siren Brigitte Bardot) and Carolyne (made famous by the ultra-chic Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy) to the well-loved Hangisi and Maysale, these silhouettes are driven by Mr. Blahnik's love for eternal beauty. After all, the designer famously said: “It is ultimately a quality of timelessness that turns a shoe into a finely fashioned objet d'art.”
Below, the master talks about working with family, his design approach and the inspirations behind his most cherished creations.
L'OFFICIEL: Hi Mr. Blahnik! What have you been busy with these days?
MANOLO BLAHNIK: Designing four women's and two men's collections per year keeps me extremely busy! I am always curious, reading, enjoying art, being outdoors and finding inspiration. I draw around 300 styles a season, but I have more ideas than I could ever create. I have also recently seen the artisans in Italy at the factory which was just wonderful. For many years I have split my time between the Canary Islands, Bath and, of course, Mayfair in London so I am constantly on the move.
LO: How involved are you in the day-to-day operations of the business today, and how has your role evolved over the years?
MB: I am so lucky to continue to do what I love, and I am very fortunately still involved in the whole process, which I adore. My passion lies with craftsmanship and visiting the artisans at the factory.
LO: Your niece, Kristina, has been with the company since 2009. After working together for 15 years, what is the synergy like between the two of you?
